Best laptops for tuning and data.

Postby Neel on Wed Nov 22, 2006 1:46 am

Customers are always asking me what laptops to buy for tuning. Here are my picks:

1. Dell Lattitude D620. The lightest and smallest laptop with a parallel port real serial port. This machine is my favorite for doing tuning and data. And Dell's support is second to none.

2. Dell Lattitude D510. A bit bigger and heavier than the 620, but cheaper too. And it has both parallel and serial ports.

Any other recommendations?

I use HP/Compaq nc6220 - has serial port on the side. Works for me with comms for a wide of engine management/data acq. products. My former Compaq 600 gave me lots of comms problems though. Those issues are gone with the nc6220.

I just got a dell latitude d630. and it's been good so far, has been problem free on ecus that where a hassle for me before. it's quite and it has airwents for cooling on the topp so it doesn't get burning hot if you keep it in your lap. and you can get them with downgrade to windows xp from dell. i havn't tryed vista, but any operative system that need 2000mb ram just to work properly is not for me.

Just got a D630 myself. Looked at Levanos, looked at Apples, but in the end practicality won out. I also got the Windows XP downgrade, but I also go the spare battery. This this goes 6 hours+ on a charge now!

I've always used IBM ThinkPad's... Specific models TxxP series. Currently I'm using an IBM T60P (XGA) laptop.. its worth the additional money IMO.
