Using a USB stick to confirm operation of the Morey unit

Postby Neel on Thu Jun 10, 2010 2:12 am

From John Moore of Morey Corporation:

To monitor all data being collected by the PIAXP DAS, a USB stick can be inserted into the DAS USB Stick Port before starting the ignition. All data collected by the DAS is stored on the USB stick if inserted. This USB Stick must not be removed until ignition has been turned off and the DAS and completed shutdown (i.e. all LED's are off) to guarantee data integrity.

This USB stick must meet the following criteria:

1) 2G or smaller
2) FAT32 formatted
3) USB 2.0 High Speed capable
4) USB Mass Storage Class Specification compliant

USB Sticks larger than 2G are not compatible. Most name brand USB sticks are USB Mass Storage Class Specification compliant but not all are USB 2.0. High quality non-USB 2.0 sticks may function properly as well but data integrity cannot be guaranteed due to the generally slower data rates of these sticks. Most generic or novelty USB Sticks are not compliant and will not provide the reliability necessary to write data at the 100Hz rate of the DAS. In addition, due to the low-power consumption nature of the DAS USB port, no USB extension cables or hubs can be used. The USB Stick must be plugged directly into the supplied connector. Note that The Morey Corporation will be providing the proper USB Sticks used during official competitions.

To retrieve data from the USB Stick, you must first install the data conversion utility. The data conversion utility converts data from the USB Stick raw format into Microsoft Excel files. Each resulting Excel file contains approximately 10 minutes of data.

This utility is designed for Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Higher and requires Microsoft .NET 3.5. The installer will provide you with an option of installing .NET 3.5 if not currently installed. If .NET 4.0 is already installed, you will still be required to install .NET 3.5 as well. This will not downgrade .NET. Both can coexist on the same system. To install the data conversion utility, run the attached installer. This will install the utility under a new Start Menu entry, "The Morey Corporation". If you have any questions regarding the installation of this utility, please contact The Morey Corporation Technical support at techsupport@moreycorp.com or by phone at 630 754-2350.

When the utility is started, you will be presented with the following window:
Image

The "Data Directory" is the directory containing the data from the USB Stick. It is recommended that the data (i.e. the entire piaxp directory) be copied from the USB stick to a local disk before attempting conversion to improve conversion performance.

The "Output Directory" is the directory where the MS-Excel files should be written to.

Once these directories are specified, clicking the "Parse Data" button will start the conversion process. Once complete, the "Output Directory" specified will contain several MS-Excel .csv files. The file naming convention is as follows:

IDxx yyyymmdd hhmmss

Where:

xx - Team Number (if your installation has not been verified and configured by The Morey Corporation yet, this may be 0)

yyyymmdd - The Year, Month and Day of data collection

hhmmss - The hours, minutes and seconds in 24-hour time of the data collection

So a file named:

ID99 20100602 174419.csv

indicates that this is Team 99's data from June 2, 2010 starting at 17:44:19.

UPDATE: There is a problem with the Morey utility to test the system with a USB drive. Morey is looking into it right now and we will post updates here as they become available.
